This coffee comes from the farm of Luis Alberto Balladarez Moncada, who runs Las Segovias mill as well. The farm name means “A Gift from God” and reflects the convictions of the owner. It was recognized as the best Nicaragua coffee in the Coffee of the Year competition at SCAA in 2010 (with a solid but not sky-high 85.5 points). Then it won 3rd place in the Cup of Excellence in 2010 with a more impressive 91.3 points, a Presidential Award score. They donated all their CoE proceeds, no small amount of money, to a home building project and church in the area of the farm. Sr. Ballardarez is a new owner of the farm, but his family has deep roots in coffee farming.

A sumptuous, creamy cup with notes of
vanilla, chocolate and banana.

Origin: Costa Rica
Region: Alajuela (Altos de Naranjo y El Rincon micro-region)
Farm: Finca El Alto
Cultivar: Catuai, Caturra
Altitude: 1234m
Processing Method: Washed

The Story:
Finca El Alto is is located at 4,000 feet above sea level in the Altos de Naranjo y El Rincon micro-region of the renowned Costa Rican coffee-growing region of Alajuela.

Grower Thomas Suarez comes from humble origins and a family with a tradition of growing coffee. He had hoped to attend college when younger but was unable to do so due to the difficult economic situation at the time. He inherited a small farm from his father and over the past 35 years has managed to make coffee his main livelihood. He has three daughters and two sons and is currently a CoopeAtenas elected delegado, which allows him to help manage the Cooperative and teach younger farmers starting out.

The farm is 20 hectares (roughly 44 acres). This coffee is wet processed (washed) and sun-dried on raised wooden tables (camas africanas), and on mechanical dryers when there is not enough sun.

This microlot was vacuum-packed at origin to maintain its quality and harvest-time freshness for the upcoming year.

We are very excited to offer this coffee from a local Massachusetts importer who has forged a direct relationship with this farm.
